Type: OU
Name: Agent Carolina
Canon: Red vs Blue
Canon point: Post Season 12
Age: Mid-Thirties
Appearance: This is Carolina's canon appearance though I also use Rachel Nichols as a PB
Personality: The first introduction you get to Carolina in RvB is that is a highly competent and confident soldier. She's good and she knows it and this doesn't really change throughout the show. But as the show goes on you get a look at the things that drive her. In her days at Project Freelancer she was obsessed with being the best to the point where she let it blind her to the things that were going on around her at the time. She missed telltale signs that her team was fracturing under the pressure put on them by the Director and his goals. Of course the thing no one ever knew was that the man she kept trying to prove her worth to was her own damn father.
Drama, amirite?
In Project Freelancer, she was the leader. Carolina cared about her team and when things were good she genuinely cared about them. They were the best of the best in their fields and she trusted each and every one of them with her back. Which only made it all the more painful when they tore themselves apart. She ended up turned against everyone and everything that she used to believe in. Following her departure from the project after one of her own teammates tried to murder her, Carolina ended up being consumed by her own anger and hatred for a while. The thing to know about Carolina's anger is that she uses it like a weapon. If she's angry she can't be hurt by others because she'll hurt them first. When she's in that place of bitterness she doesn't care what she says, she'll say unpleasant things without a second thought. But all that hate only covered up the pain she was feeling, a pain she was planning to bottle up until it got her killed.
Surprisingly, it was Epsilon who got through all the rage and found the hurting person inside. He understood her obsessions and anger and was able to sympathize because he was broken in similar ways. He also helped to get through to her the importance of letting go of the ghosts that haunt you. Between this, the Reds and Blues and Agent Washington all breaking down her walls she was able to find a measure of peace. Her team of the very best had torn themselves apart where a ragtag team of idiots had come through in ways she'd started to believe were impossible. It's not an exaggeration to say that they saved her from herself when she was on a very self destructive path.
It was thanks to all of them that when she finally faced off against the Director she realized that she could let go of all the terrible things he'd done to her. She looked on the face of a man who had destroyed her entire world and used her weaknesses against her while Epsilon raged about how he deserved to be punished for what he did and... she forgave him. She let go of the things dragging her down and walked away to leave him to his fate. And amazingly, it worked. She found a new family and a cause to throw herself into, fixing all the damage that Project Freelancer's tech had caused.
In the time since crashing on Chorus and going off on a redemption roadtrip with Epsilon, Carolina has managed to come a long way toward healing. Her relationship with the AI is a strong contributor toward that emotional health and they end up bantering and teasing one another. She has something to believe in and it's gone a long way toward changing her from a walking pillar of salt into a human being capable of having emotional connections again. She can laugh and make really, really bad jokes and honestly that's a big improvement for her. Even more important is the fact that she's willing to drop everything to help her people. The moment she heard that Washington and the Reds and Blues were in trouble she dropped everything to go help them even when it meant putting herself in danger for them.
This new Carolina is stronger than she was before but still holds notes of her old self. She's competitive and overconfident at times but she's been tempered by the things she's been through. Of course that isn't to say she's without any issues at all. She loses sight of her goals when she's face with a challenge she can't say no. Her temper also hasn't miraculously gone away and when she's riled up she'll lash out at the people she cares about without thinking. She also has a strong fear of losing the people she cares about again because she knows that losing another family will break her.
Background/AU details: Red vs Blue | Carolina
Strengths & weaknesses:
+Highly skilled super soldier
+Capable of fighting in a variety of environments
+Martial arts expert
+Leadership skills
+Weapons and infiltration expert
+Willing to put herself at risk to protect others
-Extremely competitive to the point where it undermines her ability to keep her eye on the goal
-Short tempered
-Trouble letting go of things
-Hi yes let me introduce you to Carolina's pile of baggage about losing people
-Her brain is wired up like a christmas tree, head injuries aren't a good thing
-Did I mention the whole wired up like a christmas tree thing? BECAUSE SERIOUSLY THAT FUCKING THING GOES INTO HER BRAIN
-Quick to jump to conclusions
-very dependent upon tech
Depowering/humanization: All of Carolina's abilities are dependent upon her power armor and the assistance of Epsilon to help operate the armor enhancements she uses in combat. Without these augments and gear she's still a highly competent and well trained soldier but all of her strength and abilities are within the realm of human possibility.
Placement preference: I would prefer to see Carolina placed on the Barrayaran side of the war. She's used to being on the side of the underdog and being forced to fight for an army that was striking against a poorly armed native force would not sit well with her after working with the Chorus army against Felix and Locus's space pirates. Otherwise I'm fine with whatever, though I'd be thrilled to have her end up with a castmate on her side for extra fun.
Character goals: I'd love to see Carolina dealing with a battle scenario where she has to adapt to the fact that she doesn't have high tech weapons as well as her gradually finding a place for herself within the power structure and finding that she enjoys the challenge of things without any Freelancer Bullshit involved. Whatever side of the battle she ends up on, I want to see her start to form bonds with others because finding those connections is an important part of who she is and how she handles a particular situation.
More than anything I just want to see her struggle and deal with the world around her and how different it is from the one she knows. Nothing quite like watching a super-soldier deal with having to losing all her advantages and have to learn new skills on the job.
